i reckon it's the idea of total freedom that causes paralysis. most people or groups have a dogma or black and white or method even if that is stale, it makes things pre-acceptable for others or groups it together, like say noise music, these people have nothing in common, it's the case they're rhythmically or tonally very different from each other but on lastfm dave who likes wolf eyes might get recommended horrendous shit like merzbow. i think i lost track of my point there. things get packaged and sold by association or audience. it's harder to program yourself because it causes despair/randomness and people get freaked out by that
